Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Deficiency Judgement

I was told that if my property is foreclosed on and there is a deficiency judgement, I will not have to pay taxes on this amount. However, on the other hand, if I do a short-sale, I was told that I will have to pay taxes on the deficient amount. Is there anyway to avoid paying taxes on the deficiency notice?
