Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I am being evicted from my apartment because the property owner is doing major renovations. The entire 200 unit complex has been given notices. Do i have to give formal 30 days notice to vacate when I find a new place to live ?

Have you received a notice to terminate tenancy from the landlord? If not, then you must give notice before you move. If you have, then you may leave during period provided for in their notice - the notice should say that you must surrender possession "WITHIN" the time-frame in their notice. Just be sure to pay rent through the last day you occupy the property, and unconditionally, and unequivocally surrender the unit by delivering all of your keys, gate keys or cards, passes, mailbox keys, etc... to the landlord, and get a receipt that you surrendered them. Also, to avoid surprises with the security deposit, you may request that a week before you move out the landlord conduct a walk-through with you and identify any areas where they plan to withhold your security deposit. Get them to acknowledge in writing what the deficiencies are, then make sure you have receipts or proof of having fixed them. Good luck.
