Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My ex-roommate still owes me money

My roommate still owes me money for utilities. We have a signed agreement, she keeps e-mailing me saying that she'll pay. She neglected to pay on 3 seperate occasions and finally I said if I don't receive payment by a certain date that I would take legal action. I gave her 2 more chances and still nothing.

Mr. Hobbs is absolutely right, but sometimes you can get the same result without court involvement.

If your threats are not working, then a well prepared letter with legal authority may do the trick. I guess when the other side receives a letter from an attorney, they finally get the point that you are serious about collecting your debt.

Please feel free to send me an e-mail or phone call if I can be of any further assistance.

If this is just for utilities, it can't bee that much money. Just go to the closest court where you were living, and file a small claims action. You can go up to $5000. It is the least expensive way to go, and should be resolved in a few weeks.
