Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My family has a small town founded by my great-great-great grandfather and is named after him. How would i know if I had any legal land rights. Maybe he owned a small parcel of land. Many generations were born and raised in this town with most being buried in the town cemetery. I also need to know if people can be selling merchandise with the town name printed on it. My surname. Do I have any royalty rights or naming rights to this merchandise?

You're looking back five generations. By now, the founding ancestor may have dozens of descendants. Any property he owned would have been divided many ways and probably sold many times. If you owned any, the unpaid taxes and penalties would have resulted in a tax sale. Any naming rights would require copyright or trademark action. You are dreaming.
