Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My fiance is currently incarcerated and before he was detained he took my engagement ring to get cleaned and accidentally left it at his mothers house and now she will not return it. I have a letter from my fiance which states that the ring belongs to me and that his mother needed to return it but she will not. I went to her address along with the police and the letter from my fiance but the police said they could not force her to give it back. What can I do now? The ring is worth close to $7,000.00 dollars. Although the cost isn't the issue, i want to get it back as soon as possible. PLEASE HELP guide me to what my next step should be.

Find out exactly why she will not return it. Is it because she thinks the letter is not really from her son, that you caused him to be arrested, you are a bad influence on him, she is the one who actually paid for the ring, etc. Then; you casn atempt to overcome the objections. If that does not work, have him communicate with her as to why the ring should be returned to you. The next step would be to threaten to sue her and then do so in Small Claims Court [the judgge can not order the ring be returned, only that its fair market value be paid to you.
