This is a citation to a particular part of a case. The "17 Cal 2d" means the case is found in the 17th volume of the second series of the official reports of California Supreme Court cases. The text of the case begins on page 576 of that volume, and the portion of the case being referenced is found partly on page 578 and partly on page 579.
