Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Fraud/ID Theft

I have a piece of property in Victorville. My husband sent in the property tax payment in March and it came back because the letter stated the taxes were already paid. I called the recorders office and found out that the taxes were paid for at the time of the sale. I NEVER SOLD MY PROPERTY. After 3 hours on the phone yesterday I found out that someone forged my signature as--name removed-- (Maiden name) on a grant deed. I also found out that the couple that had purchased it already sold it to another person. The San Bernardino DA's office said I had to file a report in Torrance (I live in Torrance) and then have the case sent to Victorville.

What can I do? Do I need an attorney?

Re: Fraud/ID Theft

Yes. You can recover the property but you will have to file a lawsuit to do so. If you prove the deed was forged, the purchasers received no title. You will have to reimburse the amount paid for the taxes however.
