Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

A friend of mine was helping me restore a fishing boat. The agreement was that he could use the boat as pay for his labor. We both agreed on this. With in a few months I was moving out of town, and my friend wanted to keep the boat, and just send me payments. We also agreed on this. He was having trouble with the payments, and told me he found a guy that would buy the boat. My friend told me that if I send him the pink slip, with my signature, he would sell the boat, and send me the cash. So I agreed. Sent the pink slip for the boat, and I never heard from him again. It's been between six and seven years since this happened. Can I get my money from my so-called friend?
