A friend offered to store some equipment and some merchandise inventory from my business I closed in 2008 it has come to my attention that the merchandise inventory has been disposed of without any prior notice

Your remedy here is determined by the evidence rather than the law. More specifically, although you have a cause of action against your friend for the value of the inventory, he(she) can counter with a claim for rental or, deny the value of the property --------- unless there is a written agreement, which will control.
