Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
Harrassment by landlord
I have a problem with a landlord whom I rent a room from. He spends little to no time here. His primary residence is 50 miles from here yet he says this is his house and he can do whatever he feels like with no respect to the three people that live here. The common areas of the outside of the house are not liveable. There is junk all over the patios. We have offered to finish projects and clean the patios for free but he refuses to accept. When I rented the room I was not informed of the pornography posted all over the garage. I have been told that my children and guests are not allowed in the house btu have never done anything to warrant this action. I can find nothing in the law books concerning the rights of a person renting a room and the responsibilities of both landlord and tenant. Can someone please help?

Re: Harrassment by landlord
There are a number of issues here, including:
1. whether you are renting a room in a house in which the landlord lives or renting the house together with two roommates.
2. whether the landlord is discriminating against you because of your children (familial status).
3. whether the house is habitable.
You should consult an attorney who will ask you for more details of what is happening. Feel free to call or e-mail me if you wish.
