I want to change a deed from joint tenancy to tenants in common...can I do this myself? thanks

Yes.
The procedure is basically set forth in the Civil Code, section 683.2(a)(2). You would quitclaim your interest in the property to yourself as a tenant in common. Sign before a notary and record the deed. Be sure the deed contains an accurate legal description of the property.
