Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
New Home Purchase - 2 unit Duplex
I recently purchased a new home. I agreed to let one tenant stay in the first unit, but requested that the second tenant vacate the unit prior to the close of escrow. However, the tenant is still living in the 2nd unit and I've owned the property for about a week now. I asked her to leave and she states she can't. Do I have any legal obligations to the tenant. There is NO contract between the tenant and myself (the new owner) nor is there a pre-existing contract with the original owner as it their rental agreement was verbal.
Can I ''evict'' the old tenant? City is Bakersfield, CA.
Thanks in advance,
Angel

Re: New Home Purchase - 2 unit Duplex
Yes, but you should speak with local attorey the handles landlord/tenant law right away. If you don't follow the proper legal procedures, your efforts to get possesion of the premises may be unecessarily delayed.
