He is now a tenant, like every other tenant. You will need to give him a 30 day notice of termination of tenancy, and if he does not move after that, you will need to file an unlawful detainer action (eviction) to get him out. You cannot do things like turn off the water, change the locks, etc. With friends like that .... well, you know.

3 or 30 day notice (done by a good attorney so it is correct), followed by unlawful detainer (ditto).
