Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

i own a house and about 5 months ago i let a friend of mine live there, i was going to be out of the country for some months and so he was going to pay rent month by month we didnt make a contract or anything, he was just paying in cash every month. when i came back i told him that i wanted to go back to my house and live there but he doesnt want to get out. so my question is what can i do if he doent want to get out of my house?

He is now a tenant, like every other tenant. You will need to give him a 30 day notice of termination of tenancy, and if he does not move after that, you will need to file an unlawful detainer action (eviction) to get him out. You cannot do things like turn off the water, change the locks, etc. With friends like that .... well, you know.
