It needs to be done according to the laws of the other state.

If the other state is not a community property state, the options for holding title will be (for example) different than under California law. In general, the laws of the state in which real property is situated govern, rather than the laws of the state where the owners reside. (However, note that Family Code section 125 creates an exception by defining "quasi-community property" as the property of either spouse acquired while domiciled elsewhere, and giving California certain jurisdiction at divorce or death)
