Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Increase in rent

I'd like to know if there is a limit to how much your rent can be raised when your rental unit has been sold. My rent this month is $725.00 and I received a note from my new landlord stating that next month the rent would be $925.00 - This is more than a 25% increase within 30 days - Is that legal????? What are my rights??

Re: Increase in rent

Unless (1) you are in a rent controlled unit they can raise the rent as much as they want. ; or (2) if you have a valid lease the rent cannot be raised beyond what the lease terms permit. If you are on a month to month, the rent can be raised with 30 days notice.
