Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
Just how much information must you give landlord.
My father in law is trying to rent a house he has been incapacitated and my husband is his full time care giver so we must reside with him. The landlord has asked for applications from all of us plus authorization from all of us to look into all bank, savings, credit accounts, etc. as well as a criminal check, and four months back check statements. He also has required 1st, 2nd and last months rent as well as $300 pet deposit. He wants to know more about us than we know. Is this legal. So far we have complied but he still hasn't said yes or no, is this legal?

Re: Just how much information must you give landlord.
The questions are probably legal, but the deposit demands seem to exceed those permitted by law, i.e. two months rent for an unfurnished place and three months rent for a furnished apartment. The landlord can also charge a small credit-check fee. See Civil Code section 1950.5.
