Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Can Kandlords charge back fees for pets?

Can a landlord require a security deposit for pets after the rental agreement has been signed if the pets were known about at the time the rental agreement was signed and no deposit was required at that time?

Well, it sounds from your telling of the facts that the answer is 'no,' but if you're referring the matter to LawGuru, the landlord must have asserted that he can. The terms of the written lease should govern. If either of you is relying upon some oral agreement, promise or statement outside of the written lease, that party has a mountain of proof problems to overcome.

I think you best outcome will be through an up-front discussion. Find out why the landlord believes he can impose additional terms not contained in the agreement. See if it makes any sense. If not, tell him so. This is probably not worth a lawsuit or an eviction, so talk it out.
