Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Can landlord descriminate against a persons profession?

If an exotic dancer applies for an apartment and the owner does not want to lease due to her profession is that legal?

Re: Can landlord descriminate against a persons profession?

In your case, the "profession" may be inextricably entwined with gender issues. Discrimination on the basis of sex is strictly prohibited and may form the basis for Federal and /or State court action. To find out more, please visit our website @www.labusinesslawyer.com

Re: Can landlord descriminate against a persons profession?

It is legal as long as the person being discriminated against is not a protected class. A protected class is a group the law specifically gives special protection to such as race, religion, etc. Exotic dancers are not a protected class.
