Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My landlord is increasing my rent but there are updates on my unit that need to be made that have not been done. Is there a way to challenge the fixes before I receive a rent increase?

First, I have no way of knowing whether the increase is permissible under the rules of the Oakland Rent Adjudtment Board, which limits rent increases to the CPI (Consumer Price Index) change except where the landlord can justify a greater increase by making improvements.

However, I suggest you have a polite, non-confrontational discussion with the landlord or manager about the size of the proposed increase and whether it is peremissible because updates have been completed, or whether it ought to be postponed until that happens.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, contact the Board for suggestions.
