Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

What is a landlord leagally obligated to provide for tenants

My friend lives in an apartment. She does not have a dedicated mailbox for her apartment. There is one mailbox that is shared with another apartment. Is this legal? She had a disagreement with her neighbors and now has not received any mail for a month. Are the landords required by law to provide a separate mailbox for each apartment? How would you go about correcting this problem if it is illegal?

Thank you for your time.

Re: What is a landlord leagally obligated to provide for tenants

I'm almost sure a separate mail receptacle is NOT a landlord obligation. The post office itself has some rules requiring all new construction to provide separate mail receptacles for each dwelling unit, but this regulation is for the convenience of, and enforceable by, the P.O. only, at their discretion, as far as I know. I do not know of any private right to insist upon a separate mailbox, and in fact a lot of rental properties do not have separate mailboxes.

If the landlord or the other tenant is stealing from or diverting or delaying the mail, or violating a tenant's right of privacy, this is an entirely different matter, and the tenant would have a valid complaint.
