Can landlord ask in rental application of prior felony convictions

I plan on renting out a duplex unit. When I have the potential tenant fill out an application, can I legally inquire of prior felony convictions? I am a single mom, will be living in the other unit and therefore concerned of prior sex offenders, pedophilers, etc.
