Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Can landlord sue for back rent/clean up fee if no security was collected

I am the landlord and have a tenant who rents a room in my house on month-to-month basis. The tenant paid no security deposit or last month's rent. Will my lack of security $$ prevent me from suing him after eviction for rents owed and cost of clean-up or damage. In other words, does failing to collect security up front effectively nullify my rights to sue for it later?

No, you can still go to small claims court and sue for whatever he owes you. You have not waived any rights.
