Ex Landlord Sues Ex Tenets after 4 years

Need to know how to handle a law suit with ex landlord. 4 yrs ago we moved out we lived in another state for 3yrs then 1 year ago in June we moved back. The other day myself and husband was served with papers of a lawsuit , we are being sued for $ 6000.00 damage to property she says! Well we know that we do owe her 2000.00 in late rent that we do not dispute but in no way did we do any damage to that home! when we lived there my kids where little our septic tank collapsed they had it pumped and then we had to hook up to the city,spetic was never filled in properly!HELP! how can we get recourse in this matter?? Thank you!

You usually have 30 days from when you're served with a lawsuit (summons and complaint) to get an answer on file. Unless you have already retained a lawyer, you have probably defaulted, but this is not a reason to give up, but all the more reason to get legal assistance immediately.
