Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

lease vs. month-to-month rentals

Hello,

If I move into a home (renting a room) and there is no written contract, am I by definition a month-to-month renter, or can I be "forced" to assume a lease, i.e. become a sub-lessee, even if I didn't sign anything?

Thank you!!
