Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

lease

I am renting a room in a salon. I have asked many times for a written contract and none was ever provided to me. I am now leaving and have been told I am not obligated to give any notice. I am paid thru the end of the month. My landlord says we have a verbal agreemtn to stay 1 year. I have been there only 7 months. Is this binding. I never made any verbal agreement. She also states she will not return my depsoit because of the may I am conducting myself.

Re: lease

A verbal agreement to lease property for one year or more is not valid and is barred by the Statute of Frauds. It sounds like you have a month-to-month tenancy and probably need to give 30 days notice. If your landlord does not return your deposit, you will probably have to sue to recover your money.
