Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My lease states that rent is considered late when paid after 11:59pm of 1st of the month,with no grace period. Late fee is 10% of total rend ($2175). However this is a 3-bedroom student housing apartment shared by 3 people each of us paying a separate check. If only ONE of the checks bounce is the rent still considered late? If it is, is charging 10% of the entire rent instead of the portion that's late legal?

It looks like you are in the City of Los Angeles. Special rent laws apply there. You should contat the city Rent Board.
