Is it legal to search and/or take trash once someone puts it on the curb in California?

In terms of privacy, it is considered abandoned and potentially fair game. That doesn't mean that the homeowner won't raise a fuss about someone going through the trash. Also, it depends on local regulations or statutes concerning sanitation.
