Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Lien on Property

In May of this year I put a new roof on my house. The roofer failed to pay the company that supplied the roofing material. The supplier put a mechanics lien on my property and had his lawyers threaten me with a lawsuit. The roofer is nowhere in sight. I had reported him to the Contractors State Board. What can I do? Several other people are on the same situation. I got the roofers name from an ad posted at a recognized home improvement center. The home improvement center said they are not responsible for the actions of the contractor, even though the contractor advertised his business at their location. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Lien on Property

you are stuck. Pay up or lose the house. Next time make sure the contactor is licensed and insist on a bond.
