Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I live in a condominium and we recently unscrewed the fire alarm in our unit thinking we needed to change the batteries, only to find that it was attached to the wall with power. We couldn't put it back on the wall so we called the front office and the next day they sent someone over to reattach it. They are now charging us $290 in fines because we "tampered" with the firm alam. We caused no damage and no where on the alarm does it say do not remove. Can we fight this?

Not likely. I'm willing to bet that they are enforcing something that was provided to you in writing at some point that you didn't read, or that you were given constructive notice of when you bought the place (e.g., there is a mention in the CC&Rs;of Association Rules, which puts you on notice to ask for and read the Rules). If so - consider it a $290 lesson in the importance of reading EVERYTHING that has to do with your HOA.
