Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I live in Los Angeles County in a house we own. Our neighbor has allowed his trees/shrubs to grow over top of my garage. At my request, he has trimmed any branches/leaves from actually hitting/touching my garage, but a large portion of his tree is "over top" of our garage. Do I have any legal recourse to have him take responsibility for his tree and property and cut it back from being "over top" of our garage? Am I allowed to trim it without him coming after me for damage to his property (tree)?

Tree law is complicated and can only really be applied based or the very specific facts of each situation. That said, the basic rules are you can’t make him cut them back unless they have become a legal nuisance. You can cut them back but it must not damage the integrity of the trees or you will be liable.
