Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I lived with a man for 28 years, we have 3 children together. In 1980 we bought a house in Santa Ana where I still live with my 2 adult sons. When we bought the house my boyfriend was afraid to list us as "married" because it was a legal document. He listed himself as buying the house as a single man. He left in 1998 and has never come back. I never filed for child support becaue he said I could have the house if I didn't go after him for child support. I, as a single parent struggled, but manage to keep the house and put a few needed repairs, such as a new roof etc. I have since paid off the mortgage and have kept the taxes current. Is there anyway I can get the title of this property? I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me on this!

Since you lived on the property for more than four years and you paid the taxes, you have a good argument that you acquired title to the property by "adverse possession" (sometimes known as "squatters' rights"). You will need to file a lawsuit for "quiet title." Retain an attorney to help you file it.
