lived in the same rental unit for over 25 years. 2007 new landlords rent tripled and now they want a increase in the security deposit. We are the only tenents that remained after the new ownership

Unless you have a term lease, rather than renting month to month, they can change any terms of the occupancy on 60 days notice. That includes increasing the deposit as long as the total on deposit does not exceed two-months rent at the current rate..
