Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I have lived in a trailer that is located inside a storage yard next to the company that I work at for over 14 years. Our company has leased the building and yard for about 17 years. The company we lease the building and yard from knows that I live in the yard and has never had a problem with it. A company that is located in the same business park we are just bought the building and yard from the company we lease it from. They have also always known that I live in the yard.We still have 2-1/2 years remaining on our lease. I would like to know what my rights are if they decide to make me move my trailer before our lease is up. Can I get them to pay my relocation costs?

Lots of side issues may govern how this situation winds up. The first thing that comes to my mind is what is your employer's position on this? Will they back you up or be the first to agree that the trailer's gotta go? Does your job function warrant having you there 24 hours, such as security or receiving early-morning truck deliveries? Do you have any kind of written agreement? Do you have some reason to believe the new landlord will be nit-picking? Indeed, does the lease permit, forbid or stand silent? Is the trailer and/or the space part of your compensation package?

Your rights, if any, will depend upon (1) what kind of an arrangement you have with your employer, and (2) what rules, lease provisions, ordinances, etc., if any, are being broken by the present deal.

This is not the kind of thing where you can look up the answer in a law book. The outcome will depend upon local rules, lease terms, attitudes and politics. If you have to relocate, which doesn't seem to be a certainty, payment of relocation costs could certainly become an element in any discussions among the parties. Your position probably should be that the trailer space is part of your compensation package.
