Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Lock Box on Rental Unit

My landlord wants me to sign a contract that will allow him to put a lockbox on my renter unit. He has not told me that it is up for sale. I live in California. Should I sign this document?

You are not obligated to do so, unless you have such a provision inserted in your lease. However if you are concerned about your privacy you should have a talk with the landlord. Maybe you can come up with an agrement to show the property with prior notice and appointment.

You aren't required to, and the weight of opinion is that it is unwise to do so because of the possibility of pilferage and the disruption of your privacy.

You do have to allow the place to be shown, but you are entitled to reasonable prior notice, usually 24 hours, could be more or less depending upon circumstances.
