Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
How long do I have to deal with these repairs?
I told the owner of the house I rent that the floor was becoming uneven in the kitchen. A repairman came the next weekend to start fixing the foundation, which was sinking. The repairs included tearing up the linoleum, sawwing up the floor, elavating the back quarter of the house, and hammering it all back together. My landlady hired a less expensive contractor that could only work on weekends and it has taken three weekends. Now I am waiting for the linoleum to be installed and it has been another week. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THESE REPAIRS? I haven't been able to use my kitchen for the duration of this process. Can I get money taken off my rent for the time I have been out a kitchen?

Re: How long do I have to deal with these repairs?
There is no specific time in which a landlord must accomplish repairs. If the repairs have
significantly interfered with your ability to use the residence, you can bargain for, and may in
small claims court be awarded, some compensation. If you withhold an amount from your rent, you could argue
in defense of an unlawful detainer action that the residence was not fully habitable during the time
of the repairs.
