How long after a tenant has moved away from renting a room in a house does the landlord have to pay back the deposit?

The landlord must return the deposit, or provide the tenant with an accounting for the use of the deposit within 21 days of the date of surrender of possession.

Surrender of possession is usually considered to happen when the tenant moves out and returns the keys. The landlord has 21 days to mail or hand-deliver an itemized statement of charges and credits toward the deposit, along with the balance due.
