Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Trying to get money from tenant after he has been evicted. Used an attorney friend for eviction but he is not able to help with getting money from past due rent. In Unlawful Detainer is states holdover damages and I'm not sure what that is. I am trying to get more money since he stayed longer than when the papers were filed. Also can I add on any of the expenses I incurred trying to get the place back into the shape it was when I rented it to him? Thanks.

Yes sue him in small claims court if it is less than $5,000.00
