Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I own a motel and don't know the property owner of the property that backs up to are motel. The fence is 15 feet from the back of are motel.California State fire agency [CDF]requires that we remove weeds and brush for fire control 100 feet from all buildings.Massive weeds and brush grow right up to the fence. The state fire fighters said it's my responsibility to contact the owner and ask him to remove the brush and weeds.I believe the owner lives out of state.I would cut down the stuff myself but I won't trespass. What are my options.Edward Dawson.

You can find out the mailing address for the state taxes for the lot by going to the Assessor/Tax Collector's Office; using the APN or that peson's name, you can go to the Recorder's Office and look up the grant deeds, mortgages, etc. filed as to the lot.

Contact the lot owner, cc to CDF, saying while you do not thnk it is your duty [as the CDF wants something done it is its duty to send out the initial letter to the property owner, not your's] the CDF has asked you to tell him...Volunteer to cut and remove the weeds but at a charge of $x based upon labor at $10-12/hour [around Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. there are normally halfway decent laborer, some cities have their own labor program], trunk rental, gas, dump fees [recycling centers are cheaper and better to use, but it must be "clean" green cuttings and not cans, etc.], and a supervision fee for you [you have to get and drive the truck and find the laborers and watch over them]. If the government does the work it will be much more costly. For and added fee you will spray the lot with roundup or some other chemical to keep the growth down. Send some pictures of how the lot looks. See if they want to sell it or lease it to you if you can make use of it.
