Handwritten wills are frequently legal in California, They are called "holographic" wills, and if they meet certain simple requirements are eligible for probate proceedings.

Whether a probate proceeding is necessary may depend upon (a) Canada's customs requirements, and/or (b) the size of the estate (and whether it contains real property or only personal property).

I would have three suggestions at this point: (a) Find out from Canada Customs exactly what they need in this particular situation; (b) re-ask your question on LawGuru under a heading such as "wills, trusts and estates" or "probate" so you get it directed to the right kind of experts; and (c) have an initial (telephonic or e-mail) dialogue with a probate attorney near 92069.

You will probably need an order of distribution. But that involves probate. I suggest speaking to a probate attorney near you to determine whether you qualify for smaller, administrative probate remedies.
