Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My neighbor has built a fence and part of her carport onto our property (About a foot). This occurred prior to us buying our property (in 1987). We now want to claim our property back. How do I prevent adverse possession? How do I check to see if my neighbor has paid the taxes on this extra foot?

Nobody pays taxes on a strip of land unless the tax assessor has the strip listed and assessed as a separate parcel. You need to be concerned about an encroachment and whether the neighbor can claim a prescriptive easement.
