Pet policy

I recently moved into an apartment complex. I knew the previous renters of our unit who told me that pets were allowed. A few days after we moved in, we acquired a dog(Jack Russell Terrier) because my mother-in-law couldn't take care of him anymore. One of the other tenants complained to the landlord/owner that our dog's been barking. The landlord called me today and said that there are no pets allowed. However, there are at least two other tenants in the building who have dogs and another tenant with multiple cats. I explained this to the landlord and she said that the two tenants who had the dogs, one was the apartment former manager and the other person had been there for 22 years. Shouldn't the ''no pet'' policy apply to everyone? I'd like to know what my rights are.

Check your written agreement. As Americans we can discriminate. We just can't do it on the basis of sex, age, religion, and race. Which category does your dog's discrimination fit into? Now look at the contract (lease), and see if there is a provision on pets.
