Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My previous roommate didn't pay his portion of rent during his time living here. We gave him some time to pay it back, but he left still owing $1600, $700 after we allowed him to use his portion of the deposit to pay off part of his back rent still owed. I ended up having to pay the $700 to remain in the good graces of our property manager. When he was moving out his father said he would be sending us money every week, but we have not seen any money yet. I want to take our old roommate to small claims court for the $700 I had to pay, but I'm not sure if he is working or will pay. I also don't know his current address as of now. I am not sure how to proceed from here. I have signed written statements that he is responsible for the money he owed and an acknowledgement that I paid it and that he now owes the money to me, but I'm not sure that will help. I can get proof that he never paid rent here and that I did, and proof that I paid the back rent. What should I do?

Do you know where he works? Do you have any information regarding his references to reach him? If you have no other way to find him, then you will have to hire someone to run a search for his most recent address so that you can serve him with the small claims matter.
