In 2005 my mother and I purchased a mobile home in a mobile home community for $50,000.00. The ownership paper work shows my name first and my mothers name second as the owners. I believe that we are considered as a ''joint owners''. My mother has recently been diagnosed with 3 kind of cancer and she is considered as fatal and doctors have given her approx. 2 to 3 months to live. She has been on social security and disability for a long time now. She is also on section 8 housing and also is on both medical and Medicare. My question is that if we sell this home, will my mothers half of the money go to the government or since we are on joint ownership will I be able to get the entire amount of money without the government wanting a share of it? Also please tell me if my mom passes away and then after that I sell the house will I have to give half the money to the government or what? Please help me to understand what I may be facing and if there is anything I can do while my mom is still alive to make sure that the government does not take her money? Please help. Thank you.

The government has a claim for all monies expended for her benefit; you are looking at this the wrong way--the government will not be taking HER money, but rather will be getting reimbursed for THEIR money. If every person who received government subsidies for housing and medicine did not repay that money from those assets held by them when they die, the country would collapse.
