Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Property tax default

We bought a townhouse (2 years old) in Irvine on 07/2004. We received the property tax bill for the new year recently, and while checking on the County Tax Website, we saw a TDN of one the the parcel number (NOT our APN). But when click on this TDN, we saw our APN also included (default ) in that TDN for the tax default of 2002. (The townhouse was built on 2002). It looked like that TDN is the total of 16 townhouses that was belonged the the same building. We owned 1/16 of that building. To date, the property tax paid by the former owner in full, but we don';t know if we are responsible for the TDN above (looked like it's belong to the builder). We closed the escrow on July 15,2004. What action that we need to do in order to avoid the tax default? and penalty added to the default. We didnot owned the townhouse in 2002.

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Property tax default

Contact the title insurer and report the problem. If that does not resolve the problem then contact an attorney. Tax liens do not go away unless they are paid. Any delay in reporting this incident may compromise your position.
