Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Question on legality of charging guests to a private residence for entry

I am renting a building zoned commercial and residential that I use as my residence. I want to have a large party/fundraiser and charge my guests to enter ($5 each or something). I would provide entertainment and alcohol for free. Would this be legal, or am I operating an illegal nightclub? If so, is there any way around the law?

Basically, can I have a private party and charge the guests?

The alcohol part is particularly bothersome. I think the California Alcoholic Beverage Control Board would expect you to have a license. You should ask them.
