Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

raising the rent

Are there limits as to how often, and how much a landlord may raise the rent in a one year period? This property is a house, and once the initial year-long lease expired, we've been month-to-month. Our rent has gone up $200.00 in 6 months. Is this legal?

Re: raising the rent

In response to your inquiry, let me offer the following:

The answer to your question most likely depends on where you live. Numerous municipalities in California have enacted rent stabilization ordinances ("Rent Control"), which limit the amount of rental increases landlords may impose during specific time frames.

I'd contact your local city offices and ask for the number of the agency or department that enforces rent control, call them and make inquiry. If you're located in the Southern California area, feel free to e-mail me with the name of the city in which the property is located. I'll see if I can dig out the information, in the event you have no luck getting information you need from your city.

And, feel free to contact me with additional questions or comments.

And now, the de rigueur caveat: The foregoing information is provided as an accommodation only, and does not constitute legal advice or a legal opinion based on a comprehensive review of all relevant facts and documents, nor can provision of such information be construed as creating an attorney-client relationship.
