our house is in escrow and we now would like to not sell our house due to family problems

The best bet would be to try to negotiate with the buyer to do so. You are bound to sell the house and the buyer could legally enforce the agreement if all the contingencies have been met. Re-read the purchase agreement and see if there's a way to back out without costing you too much money.
