Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

real estate - adverse possession

I have been paying the taxes on, maintaining, and managing ten pieces of property for over five years. I would like to claim them under Adverse Possession. What is involved in doing so? What would it cost? Are there requirements that must be met other than paying taxes and possession contrary to the owner's interest for five years? What exactly does ''contrary to the owner's interest'' mean?
