Realstate listing agreement period

I sing a contract w a realtor for one year but they have not really help us get a client, no one has even come to look at the property, resently we try to refinance andwe ask for the contract to be terminated we were advice by a friend a one year contract was against the law and the realter gave us a releas for but just for the refinance it states that the agrrement for sale is still on can we get out of this agreement ???

File a complaint with the Department of Real Estate agaisnt the broker.
