Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Rent Increases

I understand that there is a 10% limit on the amount rent can be increased. I want to know when that law went into effect and how often can they raise your rent per year?

Re: Rent Increases

The law went into effect this year, but it does not prohibit rent increases of more than 10%. What the new law requires is that the landlord give additional notice to the tenant before the rent can be raised more than 10%.

Unless you live in a rent control district, have a written rental agreement which does not allow for rent increases, or have a lease, a landlord can pretty much raise your rent as many times as it likes during a one year period, provided they do it properly.
